Updating your iPad

As each new version of the iPad software (iOS) is released, the Technology Department completes a thorough review of new features, and for any changes which may adversely affect the apps that are commonly used in class. After approximately 1 week, all iPad users will receive an email message recommending the new iOS be installed or in rare cases recommending that the update be deferred.

Steps:

Backup your iPad

It is very important to backup your iPad before installing an iOS update. Although Apple has improved the reliability of their software, it is still common for us to hear about atleast one user who loses their data because an update didn't go as expected. For complete backup instructions, see this How to back up your devices using iCloud or iTunes.

These are the basic instructions for backing up to iCloud. If you don't have enough iCloud space, you can delete some data or follow the instructions for backing up using iTunes on a computer.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Click iCloud, then Backup
  3. Enable backup, then select Back Up Now

You must be on WiFi for the backup to begin and you should be charged to at least 50% or be plugged into a power source.

Installing the Update

You need to dedicate about 10 minutes for a minor update (example: 9.2 to 9.2.1) and about 30 minutes for a major update (example: 9.x to 10.0).

Do not start an iOS update during class time!

For complete update instructions, see Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from Apple's website.

  1. Before beginning, make sure you know your Apple ID password, this will be used in the last step!
  2. Open Settings
  3. Click General, Software Update
  4. Click Download and Install or Install to begin
  5. After your iPad restarts, enter your Apple ID password
