Updating your iPad

Major Updates

e.g. iPadOS 16, 17, 18

Once per year, Apple releases a new version of iPadOS, typically in September. The Technology Department will prevent all BRHS-iPads from updating to these new, major, versions until such a time when compatibility with all required applications and resources can be verified. An email message will be sent when the major version is made available.

Minor Updates

e.g. iPadOS 16.4, 17.6.1, 18.2

Apple constantly releases new minor versions. These are generally made available to BRHS-iPad users within two weeks after release. Users should stay up-to-date on minor version releases because they typically resolve functionality or compatibility issues.

iCloud Backup check

BRHS-iPads are configured to automatically backup all device contents to iCloud. This happens automatically at night if the iPad is plugged into power (charging) and is connected to WiFi. Before updating to a new version, verify your current iCloud Backup status:

From your devices lock screen, i.e. before putting in your passcode or unlocking with TouchID, check the message at the bottom of the screen.

The message will indicate one of the following:

  • iCloud Backup OK - you are safe to update

  • Your iPad is not properly backing up to iCloud! - you should not update until checking with Tech Help

Updating your iPad

Before starting this process, your iPad must be charged above 50% or connected to power (charging).

Budget up to 30 minutes for major version updates - don’t perform these updates in class if your iPad will be required.

  1. Open Settings, then tap General > Software Update.

  2. Depending on your iPadOS version you will see one of these options:

    1. Download and Install - on older iPadOS versions

    2. Update Now - the software will download and install

    3. Update Tonight - the software will download and attempt to install overnight

  3. Agree to the Terms (if presented).

  4. Wait for the installation to complete.
