Info

Respondus has made their LockDown Browser product free through the end of the 2019-2020 school year. We currently do NOT have the “Monitoring” functionality in Lockdown Browser, so in a remote environment, nothing prevents the student from using two devices, minimizing the effectiveness of the Lockdown Browser.

These video resources walk through the teacher and student experience when using LockDown Browser within Schoology:

Instructions for Teachers:

Troubleshooting

  1. Below is the most common error students see when testing with the Lockdown Browser. This error is typically caused by the teacher not enabling the Lockdown Browser for the quiz in each linked section or the teacher reused an existing assessment that had already been taken by some students in a given section. To reuse an existing test/quiz, make a new test/quiz by copying it into Resources, and copying it back to your course, and then setting the Lockdown Browser settings.

Linked Sections:

If your course utilizes linked sections, you will need to enable your assessment for each section, using the section drop down menu in the top-left of the LockDown Browser settings page.

  1. Reusing existing assessments:
You cannot enable LockDown Browser for an existing assessment that has already been taken by some students in a given section.

  1. Select the setting “Allow students to take this exam with an iPad.”Do NOT select “Lock students into browser until exam completed” if the quiz/test will be taken remotely. Locking into a browser is not recommended because if their connection fails, they are locked in and cannot get out. If they exit the browser anytime during the exam, they have to provide an explanation why, so you can monitor that way.

  2. If you chose to “Lock students into browser until exam completed” anyway, make sure you set an unlock password.

  3. The Lockdown Browser settings need to MUST be set for the test/quiz in EACH of your sections individually, even if your sections are linked in Schoology.

  4. The test/quiz cannot be previously taken by anyone prior to setting up the test/quiz with the Lockdown Browser. If the test has previously been taken, the students get an error message, “Could not retrieve exam settings. Please ask your instructor to verify the exam settings on the Lockdown Browser dashboard.” A new test/quiz must be created prior to setting it up to be used with the Lockdown Browser. To reuse an existing test/quiz, make a new test/quiz by copying it into Resources, and then copying it back to your course.Students access the test/quiz in your Schoology course. They do not click on the Lockdown Browser app.Tutorials for the Lockdown Browser are available from within Schoology when you click on Lockdown Browser.
